The great Del Close |
Legendary Chicago improvisor Del Close used to preach to his improv students
that they should discard the first two thoughts that pop into their heads when
performing. He believed that the first two thoughts were usually trite
and that the third was usually golden.
I
try to incorporate that lesson in my everyday life. For example, you encounter
a pregnant woman and think:
1. How much longer until you're due? (discard thought 1)
2. Have you come up with a name for the little guy? (discard thought 2)
3. It’s a shame you have no idea who the father is. (See, now this is
going to be quite a scene!)
