Growing up in the Midwest requires having at least one
friend with benefits—that is a friend with a swimming pool. In-ground, above
ground, it didn’t matter as long as the water in the pool wasn’t green. During brutal 90-degree days, those were the first people you would call or casually
stop by their house while coincidentally wearing
your swim trunks. Making friends with people who own pools prepares you
for later on in life when you make friends with people who own a boat.
